It is all about communication!

Namaste! Day 2 of the training is already over, and what a day it was. If I have to put the day into one sentence, I would probably say: it was an interesting day, filled with fun, chaos and lots of learning moments, during which we trainers had to work very hard to get the message across.
Today the theme was communication. We started off with an exercise I do with my students back home as well. This exercise is called traffic jam. There was total chaos in the group during this traffic jam! Just like the situation in Kathmandu on the road ;-). After a time out and a discussion in the group on what was happening, how they tried to handle it and how it could perhaps be handled differently with more effect, the exercise went more smooth. In the end they were able to solve the traffic jam, through more clear communication.
After this, I explained a lot to them about communication: verbal as well as non verbal. We related it to the exercise, but also to previous situations or situations that might occur in their own work or life.
Again we did an exercise, in which they had to try to put some of the things they had just learned into practice. That turned out to be more difficult than at first thought.
Then it was time for lunch. Again we went to the same restaurant as the day before, and we had dal bhat (rice with dal - which is lentils - and vegetable curry or meat curry).
Back at the Dolpo community centre, we started with a little energizer. This had nothing to do with the theme communication, but was just to wake them up after lunch ;-). After this we continued on the theme communication with a few more exercises. There was drawing involved, very much focused on clear communication, asking questions for clarification, and focus. The exercise turned out to be very difficult for the group, so we had to come up with an idea on how to make it a bit easier for them to understand. Explaining the exercise in words did not fully work, so we decided to show them ourselves how the exercise is done. We had not practised this before, so I was curious to see if we would draw the same picture. Luckily it worked, and through this we were able to explain the exercise in a better way! Then we could put the group back to work again, and this time with much better results. After a reflection on this exercise, we did the last exercise of the day: 4 in a row. This was a combination of verbal and non verbal communication. It also turned out to be quite a difficult exercise. In the end all the groups managed, and we could not have been more proud of them! After a reflection and some tea and snacks, the day was already over. It really goes so, so fast! Amazing...
After the training, Gerrit and I went over the training for today, and we adjusted it here and there to better suit the needs of the students. I am sure it will be a great day again! The theme of today is group dynamics. Curious to find out what the day brings!
