After having prepared our training carefully over the last days, and seeing the Dolpo community centre yesterday as well, it was time for Gerrit and me to actually start the training today. Dolma (Pema's younger sister) picked us up from the guesthouse, and we walked to the Dolpo community centre. Quite some people were already waiting there, and some of them were preparing the room and hanging up the banner that they made for the training.
We started off with an introduction of ourselves, and telling the attendees why we do what we do. I also introduced the programme to them, and explained to them what we are going to be working on with each other these coming days. After that, Pema Tsewang also gave a short introduction in Nepali, and then we started the first exercise. Without explaining everything, we just made them do. Learning by doing! I had to join one group, since we needed an even number of people. That was a great experience! I did not say anything, I just let them guide me and tell me what I needed to do. They had a lot of fun doing it, but after the exercise we reflected on it and some of them shared great experiences and reflections. Both Gerrit and I were amazed by some of the reflections. Very good to hear! So not only fun, but also some very serious thoughts.
After this, we explained to them the learning circle. After the explanation we had them work in groups, and do some storytelling. Whilst sharing their stories, they also had to relate this to the learning circle we just explained. When are you in your comfort zone, how can you go to the learning zone, and when were you in the panic zone? Very interesting stories!
Then we had lunch. I am so grateful for having received so much money for all of my baking back in Holland, because this means I can fully sponsor the lunch for all the attendees! We all had thakali: rice with dal (lentils) and vegetables (or meat). Very tasty! So a bit THANKS to all of you out there who bought my cakes!! Thanks to you I am able to do this.
Back at the community centre we started with a new exercise. The group wanted to have a competition: men against women. So we formed two groups, explained the exercise, and gave them practice time first. Then we started doing it, and it was hilarious. The idea behind the exercise was to find out what role everyone has in the group. And after this, we explained the 5 roles that we identify to them. We tried to relate it to the exercise we did, but for some it was quite difficult to understand. So we discussed this a lot, gave them examples, tried to relate it to situations in life (personal experiences), and in the end we were able to make them understand more.
Then there was tea! And after that, day 1 was already over! Time goes by so quickly over here...really ridiculous!
After this, we went back to the stupa at Boudha (a certain area here in Kathmandu), and we visited ROKPA. This is the foundation we were giving a training to last year. We wanted to go back and say hi to the people over there. However, it turned out to be the birthday of the founder of this foundation: Ms Wyler. So we got invited to her birthday party! We saw lots of performances, made by the children of the children's home of ROKPA. And afterwards we were invited to join dinner. How lovely, and hospitably! We had a very nice time, and had some good food.
Tomorrow another training day. Already looking forward, and excited to see what this day will bring.
