Vandaag eerst door de Oirschotse bossen en heide naar de Generaal Majoor de Ruyter van Steveninckkazerne in Oirschot gelopen. Dat was een pittig stuk. Veel oefenterrein van defensie. Je zult het op de foto’s wel zien. Diepe sporen van de tanks en legertrucks. Wel prachtig om te zien. Maar we hebben veel zweet verloren. Vandaag liepen 3 schatten van nichtjes mee; Cora, Arjanne en Jantien. Superfijn. Dan wordt de tocht weer lichter, want je stapt samen door en je staat stil bij dezelfde dingen. Fijne gesprekken gehad. Toen we even zelf een pad maakten door het bos struikelde ik en viel plat voorover. Dan is het lastig met zo’n rugtas. Je kan bijna niet omhoog komen. Gelukkig niks aan overgehouden.

Om 13.00 uur hadden we afgesproken bij de poort van de kazerne met Leonard, die daar werkzaam is en vriend van neef Eric. Hij heeft ons een rondleiding gegeven op de kazerne. Mark heeft daar na zijn vooropleiding een poosje gezeten en toen hij stopte in Weert nog een maand of vier voordat hij werd geplaatst in Havelte. Het is de grootste kazerne in Nederland van de landmacht. Er werken daar zo’n 3000 mensen.

De kazerne is genoemd naar generaal-majoor A.C. de Ruyter van Steveninck, voormalig commandant van de Prinses Irene Brigade.

De Koninklijke Nederlandse Brigade 'Prinses Irene' (PIB) was een Nederlands legeronderdeel dat voortkwam uit Nederlandse troepen die in mei 1940 naar Engeland konden ontkomen en verder bestond uit Engelandvaarders en Nederlanders uit het buitenland die bij de Brigade hun dienstplichtvervulden of zich vrijwillig bij de Brigade meldden.

Leonard heeft ons een hele uitgebreide rondleiding gegeven. Hartelijk dank daarvoor. Aan het eind hebben we samen nog koffie gedronken en wat gegeten en toen afscheid genomen.

Cora en Jantien brachten de auto alvast naar de B&B vlakbij Boskant en kwamen ons dan tegemoet. Arjanne en ik vervolgden onze wandeltocht langs Best naar Boskant. Na een poosje fietspad konden we gelukkig de bossen weer in en zagen we Cora en Jantien weer aankomen. Even rustpauze en toen weer door. Een mooie route door bos en veld. We moesten zelfs een stukje door de mais. Dat was korter vonden we. Prachtig met die meiden hiken. Het is nooit saai.

Rond kwart over 5 kwamen we al aan bij de B&B. Lekker even gechilld en daarna in Boskant heerlijk gegeten bij ‘de Vriendschap’. Rond half 8 weer terug. De dames vertrokken en ik kon lekker gaan douchen. Zij hadden nog 2 uur rijden voor de boeg. En ik heb een heerlijk buitenterras voor mezelf alleen. Op tijd naar bed en morgen op weg naar Den Bosch.
