First thing is getting our rented car.... i love this car. It’s going to be my Friday evening car ???? Why? It automatically corrects you when you go out of the middle of the lane. There is a sign on your dashboard what signals if you’re driving not straight.
I have booked us an Airbnb at the foot of the rainforest and its 30 minutes by car from theaieport. The lady rents a room in her house and we have our own veranda.
We arrive in the dark after following the road up the mountain.
Lovely room, not chick but cheap. Elizabeth, the landlady Made us feel very welcome. She has two doggy’s names Isabel and Luis. Luis is a pup who loves to play. We played with them and took them for a walk into the forest and we found a hidden creek for the dogs to swim in. Actually the dogs new it was there.. was new for us. Elizabeth also grew wheat grass, it sounds like weed but it’s actally tarwegrass. It was the way she said it that made it sound very illegal and like she was the town dealer.
First morning (sun is up at 05:00 hours) we drove into town to get groceries. In the smaller supermarkets they sell a lot of local products. By buying you help the local farmers. So we did... tomatoes so big and red.. delicious.
Next to the shop there was a coffeehouse who rostered there own beans. Here we drunk coffee and tea with mr. Emmerich and mr. John Collingwood. John has a artist shop in town and mr. Emmerich is in the opal business. Mr. Emmerich had lots of stories about his life in Europe and Australia. He They told us about places to go... beautifull places and John in invited us to come to his shop, Australis Arts, with a map and he drew us a route. He showed me opals and the lovely paintings of his son Colin. He gave me a opal as a gift.
In the afternoon we walked past the river over the railway into town on our way to Barron falls . With out any sign or warning I was in the middle of a wine tasting thingy. So bought wine... mango wine and mango port.
Around Cairns are a lot of mango plantations with shops beside the roads to buy fruits.
Back from the Barron falls we had a drink in the pub with my favorite salt and vinegar crisps.
Three weeks of salt and vinegar crisps and rocky road chocolate... joehoe.
Long walks and up early makes you hugry and sleepy. Of to bed early.
Because sleeping at the beginning of the rainforest you can hear al the wildlife all night long... so beautifull. Pity I can put the sound of it in the diary for you all to hear and as a musical memory.
Sadly, Arriving a day late has consequences. We had to choose between different options... snorkeling The Great Barrier Reef or driving thru the country and seeing waterfalls, see, rainforest and the life and scenery of Queensland. Snorkeling was only possible on a bout with around 120 other people, who all will be snorkeling in the same place (bit crowded).
We decided to go for a drive in the country.
Arnold ate crocodile for the first time at a shop beside the road. Crocodiles tastes almost the same as chicken, it’s moisture and thicker.
We bought mangos for on the way, saw waterfalls and swim in them, mango plantation, banana plantation and the tea plantation from....
The tea plantation is also know as the place to see tree kangaroos. It’s the only region where tree kangaroos live. We were so lucky to actually see them, a mum and her baby???? in the tree eating leaves.
We spontaneously followed a path to Jacobs Creek. A steep way up on gravel road. Freaked Arnold out because we had no reception on the phone Incase we had a flat tire in the middle of nowhere and he has freight of heights and wanted to go back... to bad I was driving.
We ended up at the most beautifull waterfall we had ever seen. It was only reacheball if you climbed several rock and if you survived.... WOW... the scenery, the lookout over the valley... a secret place to hide away.
A family was already there and better prepared then us (they had beers with them).
