Mountains, Sunlight, and a Sudden Journey

My name is Savita. The same monotonous life in Gurugram—the confines of a cubicle, the pressure of targets, and a monotonous schedule. Life had become dull, as if all its colors had vanished. One evening, as I left the office, I thought, *How long will I just survive? When will I start living life?*
That very moment, I took out my phone and booked a ticket on the Rajdhani Express from Gurugram to Goa. While some people go to spas to relieve stress, I chose the path of the women. You can see the sky from a flight, but from a train you can see life and the changing seasons.
Coach A2, Seat 18: A New Face
It was evening at Hazrat Nizamuddin station. Amidst the din of the vans, the sounds of vendors, and the hustle and bustle of people, I entered my coach, carrying my heavy duffel bag.
The AC 2-tier compartment was cool and a unique sense of peace. My seat was by the window. I placed my bag aside and breathed a sigh of relief. I was just looking out the window when a tall, athletic boy entered the compartment. A charcoal gray T-shirt, a wooden sketchpad in his hand, and round glasses.
"Hi, I think I'm on the upper berth," he said in a very calm tone.
"Hello! Yes, your seat is upstairs," I replied with a smile.
"I'm Aarav," he extended his hand.
"Savita," I said with a wave of my hand.
His smile had the kind of warm vibe that would make you feel comfortable with any stranger.
Evening and a Continuity of Conversation
As the train left the Gurugram border, the weather outside began to change. The evening sun cast a pink and saffron hue across the sky.
Aarav took out his sketchpad and began to draw something with his pencil. His fingers were moving with such perfection that I couldn't contain my curiosity.
"What are you drawing?" I leaned over and looked.
He turned the diary towards me. On the canvas was a train window and the setting sun outside the window... and I, resting my head on the window.
"That... that's me?" I was a little surprised.
Aarav lowered his glasses and smiled, "Whenever I see a beautiful moment on a trip, I capture it. Memory can be weak, but not a sketch."
"Isn't that a bit cheesy?" I joked.
"It may be cheesy, but it's true," he winked.
That began a conversation that continued into the dead of night. He told me he was a landscape architect and was going to design an eco-resort in Goa. I told him about my boring corporate life. The thoughts of both of us were matching so much that it did not seem as if we had met just a few hours ago.
The Silence of the Night and the Noise of Thunder
It was around 12:30 at night. The compartment lights had dimmed. The other passengers had fallen asleep, but the two of us were continuing our conversation.
We were sitting face-to-face on the lower berth. The train turned sharply with a slight jolt, and I lost my balance. I leaned forward, and my hand landed directly on Aarav's shoulder.
It seemed as if time stood still for a second. Aarav placed his hand on my waist to keep me from falling. The warmth of his hand and his closeness made my heart race.
"You okay?" he asked in a very soft, deep voice.
I could feel the warmth of his breath on my face. I saw something in his eyes—something there that shook me to my core.
"Yes... I'm fine," I said softly, but I didn't immediately remove my hand from his shoulder.
He took my hand and pressed it lightly. In that dim light, without speaking, our eyes spoke volumes to each other.
Konkan Coast and Hot Air
When I woke up the next morning, the train was passing through the Konkan region. Tunnels, long bridges, and lush green valleys all around. The weather was very romantic, with a light fog and a drizzle.
Aarav was already awake. As soon as he saw me, he handed me a cup of hot coffee.
"Good morning, traveler from Gurugram," he smiled.
"Good morning! This view is magical," I said, looking out the window.
Suddenly, the train entered a very long and dark tunnel. The compartment was completely dark.
In that dark silence, I felt Aarav bring his face closer to mine. He planted a soft, gentle kiss on my cheek. The kiss was so pure and lingering that it gave me goosebumps. When the train came out of the tunnel and the light returned, he held my hand in both his.
